نشأت فكرة هذا الكتاب من متابعة المؤلفة لما يقوم به العاملون مع الاطفال في سن ما قبل المدرسة، وما يواجهونه من صعوبات في عملية تصميم برنامج تربوي قائم على اسس علمية سليمة، سواء كان ذلك البرنامج قد خطط ليوم واحد او لاسبوع او لشهر او اكثر.
واكثر ما يلفت النظر في البرامج التي تعدها المعلمة لاطفالها غياب الفلسفة والاهداف المحددة الواضحة الصياغة، وبالتالي اللجوء الى مجموعة من الانشطة لا ترابط بينها ولا تغطي مجالات النمو المختلفة، ولا تتصف بتتابع ياخذ بعين الاعتبار طبيعة نمو الطفل واحتياجاتع واستراتيجياته في التعلم.
يتناول الفصل الأول من هذا الكتاب الأسس الفلسفية والإجتماعية والنفسية التي ينبغي للمعلمة أن تتخذها إطاراً مرجعياً لبرنامجها، ويعرض الفصل الثاني بعض النماذج التي قدمت لتصميم برنامج تعليمي وفق أسلوب النظم (Systems' Approach).
أما الفصل الثالث فيبدأ بالخطوة الأولى في تصميم البرنامج والتي تشمل الغايات والأهداف والموضوعات الرئيسية للبرنامج المقترح، ويختص الفصل الرابع بالخطوة التالية ألا وهي تحديد خصائص المتعلمين، ويدرب الفصل الخامس المعلمة على كيفية صياغة الأهداف التعليمية السلوكية ويقدم نماذج لأهداف مرتبطة بخبرة "روضتي" من دولة الكويت والجمهورية العربية السورية، بالإضافة إلى الأهداف السلوكية التي وضعتها المؤلفة لهذه الخبرة.
وينتقل الفصل السادس إلى كيفية إختيار الأنشطة التعليمية المحققة للأهداف ولإحتياجات المتعلم وتتماشى مع نمط تعلمه، ثم يقدم الفصل السابع بدائل في الوسائط والمصادر والخدمات التعليمية المساندة، أما الفصل الثامن فينصب على عمليات التقويم القبلي والتشخيصي المصاحب والبعدي بالإستعانة بالأمثلة، ويقدم الفصل التاسع والأخير نظرة شمولية لبرامج تربية الطفل.
