هناك الكثير من الأشياء التي لا نفهمها وهذه مشكلة شريحة واسعة من المجتمعات إن لم نقل أنها مشكلة كل الناس؛ ليس لأن هذه الأشياء صعبة أو مبهمة وفقط بل لأنها قد تكون أغمض بكثير حتى من الشيء الذي نيأس من فهمه، فمشكلة بعض الأشياء أنها على الرغم من عدم فهمنا لها إلا أننا لا نيأس من محاولة إقناع أنفسنا بها، والغريب أن الأشياء التي تستعصي على الفهم بالنسبة لنا هي مسلمات بالنسبة لآخرين كما أن بعض ما لا يفهمه غيرنا هو أمرٌ مسلّم بالنسبة إلينا، ليس هذا فحسب بل ربما نصل إلى نوع من الفرض العقلي أو الحتمية الذهنية حيث أننا نرغم عقولنا على التسليم بشيء لا نفهمه، ثم إن البعض قد يرى في هذا نوعا من الأمراض النفسية فيما يراه آخرون نوعا من الإيمان، لسنا هنا في صدد دراسة موضوع الولايةِ من الناحية الدينية ولا نحن في صدد إثبات أونفي وجهات نظرٍ حولها، ولكننا نريد أن نُلفت الانتباه إلى خطر تحديد الفكرة المسبقة حول موضوع ما، ما يمنع من فهم المقصود منه، وبالتالي فإن كتابنا هذا يبحث موضوع الولاية من جهته التاريخية الاجتماعية النفسية في سبيل الوصول إلى واقع الظاهرة خلال الفترة المدروسة فقط بأقصى ما يستطيعه العقل البشري من موضوعية وحياد سعيا منا إلى رسم صورة ما كان لا صورة ما نحسب أنه كان أو يجب أن يكون والله من وراء القصد وهو نِعْم المولى ونِعْم النصير.
