لقد عُرِّفت ما بعد البنيوية بأنّها تحليلٌ استراتيجيّ نقدي للسّرديات وللممارسات الخطابية المنتجة للمعنى، وهو التحليل الذي يركّز ليس فقط على ما هو ظاهر ولكن أيضاً على ما هو متروك أو مهمّش أو مكبوت. وهي تعدّديّة في أشكالها ومبادئها. هذا يعني أنّ هنالك ما بعد بنيويّات مختلفة: هناك تلك التي تعتمد التحليل النفسي، النِّسويّة، الماركسية، والفلسفية،... الخ. هذه الأنماط من ما بعد البنيويّة تشترك في كثير من المعتقدات رغم اختلافها، وتكون فيها الهويّة الفردانيّة قيد التشكّل دائما، مع وجود الذات المنقسمة واللاوعي المتكلّم، بالإضافة إلى النّظر إلى السرديّات الصّغرى micro-narratives بدلاً من السرديّات الكبرى grand-narratives. وقد تحتاج النقاط المثارة أعلاه، مثل الهويّة أو السردية الكبرى، إلى مزيدٍ من التوضيح؛ فالهويّة كما يفهمها مفكّرو ما بعد البنيويّة تختلف جذريّاً عن تلك التي يفهمها وينظّر لها الفلاسفة الماهويّون essentialists والمنظّرون الثقافيّون الأرثوذكسيّون التقليديّون. ففي نظر هؤلاء الماهويين والتقليديّين تكون الهويّة ثابتة وجوهرا قبليا، وهم ينظرون إلى الشخص نتيجةً لذلك كوارث للهويّة وليس كصانع لها. وبنفس الأسلوب آمنت الماركسية الأرثوذكسية/التقليدية، بوصفها سردية كبرى، بنموذج الهويّةِ الموحَّدة والمتماسكة التي (تنتجها الطبقة). وعلى خلاف هذه النظرات، تمتلك ما بعد البنيويّة فكرة وتأويلاً مختلفين للهويّة. تهتمّ جوليا كريستيفا، على سبيل المثال، بمفهوم الهويّة على أنها قيد التشكّل دائما، بمعنى أنّ الهويّة غير مستقرّة وغير منتهية أو ومستقلّة ولكنّها منخرطة دائماً في تفاعلات علائقيّة، ممّا يجعلها عُرضة للتغيّر من خلال حَرَكيّة المثاقفة والاندماج الاجتماعيّ.
