تختلف المعرفة التاريخية "للنقد" العربى القديم عن المعرفة التاريخية "فى" النقد العربى القديم، فالموضوع الثانى يقوم على السؤال: كيف كان الناقد القديم يعرف التاريخ؟، والموضوع الأول يقوم على السؤال: كيف نعرف نحن تاريخ النقد العربى القديم؟، وهذا هو السؤال الذى يثيره هذا الكتاب، وإن يكن السؤالان كلاهما مهمان، ولكن لا مفر من الاختيار، ونشير "بالقديم" إلى مساحة زمنية كبيرة، تمتد قرونا قبل الإسلام، وتمتد قرونا بعد الإسلام، وتنتهى بنهاية القرن العاشر للهجرة، وبعد القرن الحادى عشر، وما يتلوه إلى اليوم فى القرن الخامس -1419 هـ تحديدا- بحثا عن العصر "الحديث" لا القديم، وتلك قصة أخرى.
ونحن، عادة، لا نعرف النقد القديم أول ما نعرفه بقراءة مباشرة للنصوص التى خطها الناقد القديم، أو التى تروى عنه، ولكننا نبدأ بمطالعة البحوث التاريخية المعاصرة التى ظهرت فى القرن العشرين، راجين منها أن تزودنا بتصور عام شامل للتراث النقدى فى امتداده الزمانى، ونستصحب هذا التصور العام معنا، فى أذهاننا، حين نطالع، وجها لوجه، نصوص النقد القديم، فنلتمس فيها مصداق التصور الذهنى الشامل، فيغدو مصفاة، أو عدسة، نرى إلى التراث من خلالها، بالقدر الذى تسمح به شفافيتها، ونفاذ البصر فيها ويريد هذا الكتاب، فى أول أهدافه، أن يستخلص هذه الصورة الذهنية، بما تلتبس به من حقائق واستعارات، ويصور خطوطها التى ترسم بها خلال فصول الكتاب فصلا فصلا.
