النساء الشواعر هن موضوع هذا الكتاب، ولقد نهج المصنف في هذا نهجاً خاصاً، أبرز ملامحه: أولاً: صنف الشواعر وفقاً لقبائلهن. ثانياً: أسند الأخبار إلى مصادرها من رواة أو محدثين. فقبل كل خبر ذكر ما نصه: كتب إلي فلان، أو وجدت بخط فلان، أو أخبرني فلان، أو حدثنا فلان، ثالثاً: وكان يشير إلى الاختلاف في الروايات والاختلاف في نسبة الأبيات أحياناً، رابعاً: وكان يفسر الكلمات الغريبة في بعض المواضع، خامساً: وقد اختلف مقدار الترجمة طولاً وقصراً بحسب أهمية الشاعرة.
