اهتم المسلمون منذ فجر الإسلام في توثيق أنساب العرب، واشتهر رجال كتبوا في علم النسب، وتركوا آثاراً معتمدة حتى يومنا هذا. إضافة إلى هؤلاء فقد اهتم كثير من المؤرخين في علم النسب وكتبوا وألفوا كتباً في هذا المجال، وقد ظهرت في يومنا هذا كتبوا موسوعات عديدة في علم النسب، مثل "E3Lvr5Dz9mhref='/abookstore/bookpage.asp?id=15040'>معجم قبائل العرب" لعمر رضا كحالة، و"العرب قبل الإسلام" لجواد علي وغيرها، وكلها جاءت جهوداً مضنية وصادقة من أجل حفظ أنساب العرب ونقلها جيلاً بعد جيل.
وفي هذا الإطار تأتي هذه الموسوعة تحت عنوان "موسوعة القبائل العربية" وعنوان فرعي "أنسابها، وقائعها، مآثرها، شعراؤها". وهي موسوعة تحمل سمة الشمولية في محاولة لشق طريق مستقل، مستقل بين كل ما صدر من كتب وموسوعات ومعاجم في هذا المجال. بالاعتماد على ما صدر قبلها من هذه الكتب. وتمّ التخطيط لأن تكون هذه الموسوعة ضمن جزأين، وذلك بالنظر إلى الترتيب الأبجدي. وتجدر الإشارة إلى أن تميز هذه الموسوعة تجلى في الاهتمام وعند ذكر القبائل العربية، باستطلاع دور القبيلة التاريخي والسياسي على الساحة العربية في تلك الآونة، وما خاضته من حروب ومصادمات ونزاعات وغزوات لأسباب متعددة.
بالإضافة إلى ذلك حرصت الموسوعة على التقاط المآثر العربية من قيم أخلاقية ومثل عليا تحلت بها القبائل العربية، وقد تمّ إبراز تلك المآثر وتسليط الضوء عليها لتكريسها لدى الأجيال اللاحقة باعتبارها جزءاً من الموروث والتقليد الواجب الحفاظ عليه وقد أكدت الموسوعة على كل هذا، مشيرة إلى كل أولئك الرجال والنساء الذين سطروا تلك الملاحم الحيّة، فضربوا المثل الحي مثلاً في الشجاعة والإقدام والخلق الرفيع.
