يُعتَبَر وليم فوكنر واحداً من الروائيين الخمسة الكبار في تاريخ الأدب الأميركي، بل هو أحد كبار الروائيين في تاريخ الادب العالمي، وإعترافاً له بهذه المكانة مُنِح جائزة نوبل للآداب عام 1949.
ولد فوكنر عام 1897 في ولاية ميسيسيبي بالولايات المتّحدة الأميركية، وتوفّي فيها عام 1962، له مؤلّفات عديدة في حقول أدبية مختلفة أهمها الرواية.
تدور وقائع روايته "اللصوص"، التي نُشرت بعد وفاته، في ولاية ميسيسيبي الجنوبية، مطلع القرن العشرين، في حقبة إنتقالية شهدت بداية ظهور السيارة وتطور المدن، كما شهدت أواخر مرحلة العبودية القانونية، وهي تصوّر مزيجاً من الشخصيات من أعمار وطبقات وأخلاقيات ومهن متفاوتة، بين مراهقين وبالغين، عبيد ومحَرَّرين وسادة أحرار، موظّفين ومحتالين، مُحصِنات ومومسات، تتحرك جميعها في سياق أوضاع إجتماعية وأحداث قائمة، ضاحكة، بلهجة الجنوب الخصوصيّة.
