للعنف أشكال عديدة تتراوح بين الإساءة اللفظية، والعنف الجسدي وإلحاق الضرر بالأشخاص، وصولاً إلى إرتكاب جريمة قتل، وقد يكون نتيجة لردّة فعل طبيعية، أو ناتجاً عن سبق إصرار وتصميم.
لا أحد يحتكر العنف بنفسه، إذ يمكن أن يتورّط به الكبير والصغير، الأنثى والذكر، القريب والبعيد، الأسود والأبيض، ويصل حتى إلى علاقة الإنسان مع الحيوانات الأليفة.
ويمكن أن يظهر أيضاً في البيت والمدرسة، في مكاتب العمل وفي أماكن الراحة والإنسجام، في الشارع والحديقة ووسائط النقل العامة، وأثناء متابعة الألعاب الرياضية.
يزداد العنف في أيامنا هذه بشكل لم يسبق له مثيل أبداً، فكان لا بدّ من البحث في أسبابه البعيدة والقريبة، النفسية منها والإجتماعية، بغية تشكيل فهم واسع يفسح المجال امامنا لمحاولة التخفيف من آثاره الكارثية على الجاني والضحية على حدّ سواء.
