"الحقّ في المدينة" ليس بمفهوم جديد يطرحه ديفيد هارفي لأول مرة في كتابه هذا، فقد سبقه هنري لوفيفر بأطروحته الحقّ في المدينة واهتمّت بالأمر عدّة جمعيات وتنظيمات.
وتُوّج هذا الإهتمام بصدور الميثاق العالي للحقّ في المدينة عام 2003 الذي يكفل التطبيق الكامل لحقوق المواطنة ومستوياتها مؤكّداً أن "الحقّ في المدينة هو إطار عمل لمشاركة المواطنين المتساوية في تحديد تنمية وتطوير البيئة الحضريّة".
يعيد ديفيد هارفي في أجزاء كثيرة من هذا الكتاب، مدن متمرّدة، قراءة الأدبيات الماركسية لتحليل هذا الحقّ وتوضيحه باحثاً في ثنايا الماركسية عن حلول... مثل أن تكون المدينة وليس المصنع هي نواة الحركات الثوريَّة أو أن يكون العمّال غير الآمنين وغير المنظَّمين والمؤقتين والمهاجرين هم طليعة هذه الحركات بدلاً من عمَّال المصانع التي لم تعد موجودة بشكلها القديم.
هذا الكتاب، يضع المدينة في قلب العاصمة وفي قلب الصراعات الطبقية، باحثاً في بعض المدن من جوهانسبورغ إلى مومباي، من نيويورك إلى ساو باولو، كما درس حالات كومونة باريس وإحتلال وول ستريت ومشاغبات لندن.
ويطرح هارفي السؤال الآتي: كيف يمكن أن تُنظّم المدن وفق العدالة الإجتماعية وبطرق بيئية سليمة، وكيف يمكن أن تصبح هذه المدن مركزاً للمقاومة المعادية للرأسمالية؟ وهل يتحكّم خبراء المال والمستثمرون بمداخل الموارد الحضريّة، أو أن الناس هم من تحكّمون؟ ومن الذي يملي نوعيّة الحياة اليومية وينظّمها؟...
