من دوافع الباحث إلى إختيار هذا الموضوع لنيل درجة الدكتوراه، التقدم الذي حققته أوروبا في العصر الحديث بعدما عاشت قروناً في ظلام، والأثر الذي صبغ به الفكر الأوروبي الحديث الحياة في أوروبا، وتأثر به العالم كله، نتيجة إنبهاره بالتفوُّق المادي وما حققه هذا الفكر في مستويات الحياة كلِّها، الإجتماعية والسياسة والإقتصادية... وغيرها.
فبحث في ثلاثة أبواب: علاقة هذا الفكر بالعقيدة، والمراحل التي مرَّ بها، والعوامل التي أثَّرت فيه، وترجم للفلاسفة الذين كان لهم أثر في الفكر الأوروبي، مبتدئاً بنشأته في العصر اليوناني، ثم الروماني، لينتقل إلى العصر الحديث.
وتوسع في بحث أثر الكنيسة، والفكر اليهودي التلمودي، والحضارة الإسلامية في هذا الفكر.
وختم بآثاره الفكرية، والسياسية والإقتصادية، والإجتماعية، وقارن ذلك كلِّه بالفكر الإسلامي، ليخلص إلى نتيجة مؤداها أنه لا يصح إغفال الناحية الروحية التي فُطِر عليها الإنسان والتي همَّشتها الشيوعية، كما همَّشها كثير من فلاسفة الفكر الأوروبي الحديث.
