تحفل كتب التراجم العربية التي عنيت برصد حياة الأعلام اعتمادًا على المراحل الزمنية التي وجدوا فيها مثل: "الدرر الكامنة في أعيان المئة الثامنة" لابن حجر العسقلاني، و"الضوء اللامع لأهل القرن التاسع" للسخاوي، و"الكواكب السائرة في تراجم أعيان المئة العاشرة" للنجم الغزي.
وهي- في مجملها- تشكل منظومة مترابطة، تبين مسار الحياة بشكل واضح في المجتمعات العربية الإسلامية في تلك القرون، وتظر واقعها اعتمادًا على معلومات توثيقية دقيقة.
ورغبة في الكشف عن ثرائها التوثيقي ونفعها العلمي في كتابة التاريخ العربي الإسلامي، فقد اخترنا نموذجًا منها، هو "الضوء اللامع لأهل القرن التاسع" لمحمد بن عبد الرحمن السخاوي، قصرنا البحث فيه على متابعة الحياة العلمية لاستكشاف صورتها، وتوضيح ملامحها، وتبيين مسارها بشكل دقيق، وبخاصة أن المؤلف نفسه كان من أعلام ذلك القرن، مما يعني أن المعلومات التي ضمنها كتابه استقاها من وحي مشاهداته ومعرفته بعدد كبير ممن ترجم لهم. وقد اعتمدنا في هذه الدراسة على طبعة دار مكتبة الحياة في بيروت.
وسوف نعنى بمتابعة ورصد المعلومات ذات القيمة التوثيقية الموضحة لتلك الصورة التي تتناثر في أثناء "الضوء اللامع"، للتوصل إلى دلالاتها العلمية التي تشكل- في مجموعها- بنية هذا البحث اعتمادًا على إيراد نصوصها- في الغالب- أو اختصارها في بعض الأحيان، ويتوزع الكتاب على ستة فصول قصيرة، هي: المؤلف والكتاب، صناعة الكتاب وتجارته، المكتبات الخاصة ومكتبات المؤسسات العامة، نماذج الكتب المتداولة في القرن التاسع، التأليف واتجاهاته، أعلام النساء.
