عند حدوث عطل في جزء من أجزاء الشبكة الكهربائية يسبب إرباكاً كبيراً في النظام الكهربائي ككل عالم يكن هناك حماية لبقية أجزاء الشبكة.
ولهذا قدم المؤلف دراسة تحليله في هذا الكتاب إلى أنواع الأعطال التي تصيب الشبكة الكهربائية ومن ثم قدم الأسس والوسائل لحماية النظام الكهربائي بشكل عام.
وعليه، يأتي هذا الكتاب في سياق الكتاب الجامعي الذي يحتاجه الطالب في السنوات الأخيرة في تخصص الهندسة الكهربائية وكذلك يكون مفيداً إلى المهندسين الذين يعملون في مجالاً التوزيع والتخطيط للشبكات الكهربائية لمعرفة نوع أجهزة الحماية ومكانها.
وقد اعتمد المؤلف في تأليف هذا الكتاب على المراجع الإنجليزية وبعض المراجع الأخرى المتسمة بالحداثة ليكون واضحاً ومختصراً ومتوازناً مع برامج الجامعات الكبرى.
يحتوي هذا الكتاب على اثني عشر فصلاً: تناول الفصل الأول تمثيل نظم القدرة الكهربائية وتحليل الطور الواحد ومن ثم إستعمال نظام الوحدة في الدوائر الكهربائية ثلاثة الطور وتحويل نظام الوحدة إلى نظام آخر؛ أما الفصل الثاني والثالث فقد تم بحث الأعطال الكهربائية، أنواعها، أسبابها، ودراسة المركبات المتناظرة والغير متناظرة ودوائر التتابع، ثم قدم المؤلف دراسة تحليلية للأعطال المتناظرة والغير متناظرة.
أما الفصل الرابع فقد تناول التحليل الشعاعي للأعطال المتناظرة والغير متناظرة وتناول الفصل الخامس إستخدام مصفوفة المعاوقات للنقاط في حسابات العقد للأعطال المتزنة والغير متزنة ومن ثم وضع مخطط إنسيابي لتحليل الأعطال على الحاسب الآلي.
تناول الفصل السادس أجهزة القطع والحماية - القواطع الذاتية والمنصهرات وقواطع الفصل والعزل وسبل إطفاء القوس الكهربائي، بعدها تم دراسة المبادئ الأساسية في الحماية (الفصل السابع) وإعطاء أنواع معدات الحماية وأنواع المرحلات التي تستخدم في الحماية في النظام الكهربائي بشكل عام أما في الفصل الثامن فقد تطرق المؤلف إلى تنظيم الجهد في النظام الكهربائي لما هذا الموضوع من أهمية عند حدوث أعطال كهربائية.
أما الفصل التاسع فتناول الطرق المستخدمة في حماية النظام الكهربائي الحماية بالتيار الأعظم، حماية شبكة شعاعية، حماية شبكة حلقية، الحماية الإتجاهية... إلخ.
أما الفصول المتبقية فقد تناولت حماية خطوط النقل والمحولات الكهربائية والآلات الكهربائية.
