منذ بداية التاريخ الحديث كانت شبه جزيرة كوريا محط أطماع دول آسيا العظمى، سواء أكان ذلك من اليابان أو روسيا أو الصين، حيث استطاعت الأخيرة نقل مظاهرها الاجتماعية إلى شبه الجزيرة الكورية بكل أشكالها، وكثيرًا ما اندلعت الحروب بين روسيا واليابان رغبة في الاستيلاء عليها لا لشيء سوي تحقيق ما ارتأته كلتا الدولتين ضرورة استراتيجية لتحقيق هدف للأمن القومي لكل منهما في مواجهة الأخرى بإيجاد عمق دفاعي وتحقيق أهداف اقتصادية.
وكانت الغلبة في نهاية الصراع الياباني الروسي لصالح امبراطورية اليابان التي استطاعت عام 1910 ضم شبه جزيرة كوريا إليها، وبدأت اليابان في استخدام كل أسلوب يمكنها من فرض سيطرتها على شبه جزيرة كوريا مستغلة في ذلك الضعف العسكري والجهل المتفشي في شعبها.
فكان من الملائم إلقاء الضوء على الفترة اللاحقة للحرب الكورية، لتوضيح الظروف المحيطة بجمهورية كوريا الجنوبية خلال الحرب وما تلي ذلك، وكذا علاقاتها الخارجية وأثر ذلك على كيانها الاقتصادي، وكيف استطاع هذا الشعب أن يضرب المثل شأنه شأن الشعب الياباني في بناء اقتصاد قادر على المنافسة العالمية.
ومرد ذلك الرغبة الصادقة لدى القيادة السياسية لدى جمهورية كوريا في بناء الدولة الناشئة اقتصاديًا وعسكريًا مستغلًا في ذلك الرغبة الأمريكية في توطيد العلاقات بها لإيجاد قاعدة عسكرية بها، فكانت هذه الرغبة الأمريكية هي الفرصة التي مكنت رئيس جمهورية كوريا من تحقيق أهداف قومية.
