إن العلوم الحديثة تتطور بسرعة هائلة؛ فلا يكاد يصلنا شيء من هذه العلوم؛ حتى نسمع بتطور جديد، ولم يقتصر هذا التطور على علم دون آخر؛ فشمل ذلك مختلف مناحي الحياة، ولا يختلف علم اللغة عن هذه العلوم؛ فمنذ بدأت العناية به وهو يتسارع بشكل كبير؛ إذ ظهرت عدة مدارس ونظريات في اللغة في مختلف انحاء العالم، وتولد عن كل مدرسة أو نظرية مفاهيم عدّة؛ واحتاج أصحاب هذه النظريات إلى ألفاظ تؤدي المفاهيم التي يريدونها بأسهل الطرق وأدقها؛ وفق ما تسمح به لغاتهم.
وعندما دخل هذا العلم إلى العربية أحس المتعاملون معه بغرابته وصعوبته؛ وذلك بسبب أمرين اثنين، أولهما: أن هذا العلم اللغوي الحديث نشأ وتطور في بيئة غريبة عنهم، وعندما وصل إليهم أحسوا بأنهم أمام علم جديد لم يُعهد من قبل؛ فهذا العلم يختلف إختلافاً كلياً عن العلوم اللغوية العربية القديمة.
