يعد التخطيط الإجتماعي أحد طرق الممارسة غير المباشرة للخدمة الإجتماعية والتي تتطلب العمل على مستوى الوحدات الكبرى من أجل تنفيذ السياسات الإجتماعية.
ويتناول الكتاب عدد من الموضوعات من أهمها التخطيط الإجتماعي وأسسه النظرية وموضحاً خلاله تعريف التخطيط الإجتماعي وماهيته وأهميته ووظائفه، أهدافه، مبادئ، شروط نجاحه، خصائص التخطيط الإجتماعي الجيد، وواجبات المخطط الإجتماعي..

ثم عرض في الفصل الثاني أنواع التخطيط الإجتماعي ومستوياته، وتناول الفصل الثالث التخطيط الإستراتيجي، ثم تناول الفصل الرابع مراحل التخطيط الإجتماعي ومراحل وضع الخطة وما هي مشتملات الخطة الجيدة.

ويعرض الكتاب في الفصل الخامس تحديد الأولويات في التخطيط الإجتماعي موضحاً مفهومها، وأهميتها، أساليبها، المشاكل والصعوبات التي تواجهها، عوامل نجاحها، واخيراً أمثلة تطبيقية لكيفية تحديد الأولويات، وتناول الفصل السادس الاسلوب الموحد للتخطيط الإجتماعي، كما تناول الفصل السابع صنع وإتخاذ القرار التخطيطي، وجاء الفصل الثامن تحت عنوان العولمة والتخطيط الإجتماعي، ثم تناول الفصل التاسع نظم المعلومات والتخطيط الإجتماعي، وتناول الفصل العاشر مشكلات التخطيط الإجتماعي في مصر وأخيراً الإشارة إلي دراسات ميدانية في إطار التخطيط الإجتماعي بصفة خاصة والخدمة الإجتماعية بصفة عامة.
