هذا الكتاب هو واحد من أهم الكتب التاريخية، وصاحبه علم من أعلام التاريخ العربي والإسلامي في فترة العصور الإسلامية الوسطى، والكتاب مرجع تاريخي غاية في الأهمية والقرب من حياة الحاكم والمحكوم بشكل يوحي للقارئ بملازمته للأحداث ومعايشته لها كاملة غير منقوصة. وهو أيضاً من أبرز كتب المقريزي، وكذلك من أبرز كتب التاريخ المصري الوسيط. أتمّ به المقريزي سلسلة التواريخ المصرية بجمع وتسجيل وتصنيف أكبر حشد من المعلومات حول الأئمة من آل البيت النبوي الشريف يؤرخ لهم من البداية للنهاية... منذ الإمام علي بن أبي طالب رضي الله عنه وحتى إرهاصات سقوط الدولة الفاطمية على يد السلطان "صلاح الدين يوسف بن أيوب" سنة أربع وستين وخمسمائة، الذي تمّ فعلياً بعد عامين من ذلك التاريخ؛ لينتهي به عصراً وتغلق به صفحة من صفحات التاريخ الإسلامي بما لها وما عليها... صفحة بدأت هناك في المغرب في ربيع الأول سنة سبع وتسعون ومائتين بالإمام عبيد الله المهدي وانتهت بالخليفة العاضد لدين الله أبو محمد عبد الله في آخر ذي الحجة سنة ست وستين وخمسمائة، بعد أن استمرت تحكم بقعة واسعة من الأرض والنفوس قرابة القرون الثلاثة.
نظم المقريزي كتابه هذا على منهج مغاير لما شاع في المؤلفات السابقة له في تاريخ ابن الفرات أو الدواداري أو النويري، وما صنعه هو أيضاً في موسوعته "السلوك لمعرفة دول الملوك"، فقد جعل كتابه هذه المرة خليطاً من منهجين أحدهما: حوليّاً، والآخر: التأريخ بالسيرة الحياتية للخلفاء، وخلطهما معاً، فكان يبتدأ بذكر الخليفة ثم يعرض مؤرخاً لسنوات حكمه مدوّناً لحوادث كل عام، مفصلاً وشارحاً للأسباب التي صنعت الحدث والنتائج التي ترتبت عليه. ولأهمية هذا المصنف عنى "محمد أحمد عطا" بتحقيقه وبتخريج الآيات القرآنية التي وردت فيه، هذا بالإضافة إلى تدوين ترجمة مفصلة للأماكن والأشخاص التي كانت محور الأحداث خلال الفترات الزمنية التي تعرض لها المقريزي في كتابه بالإيجاز للتيسير على القارئ وإعطائه نظرة أكثر شمولاً للأحداث.
