لقد استعمل الأوربيون النوطة الموسيقية لتدوين تراثهم وأعمال روادهم الموسيقيين أمثال بيتهوفن وهاندل وباخ وشوبان وتشايكوفسكي وريمسكي كورساكوف وغيرهم.
ولهذا بدأت ألحانهم منذ بداية النهضة الأوروبية تعزف وتذاع في أرجاء العالم كافة حتى يومنا الحاضر، وستظلّ خالدة ما دامت محفوظة بالتدوين الموسيقي.
أما نحن العرب، ولا سيما في مدينة حلب الشهيرة بأم الطرب والفن الموسيقي في الوطن العربي، فإن أعمال روّادها الموسيقيين بناة قاعدتها الفنيّة؟ ففنّهم الذي اندثر لعدم تدوينه بالأبجدية الموسيقية - فإننا فقدنا أعمالهم العظيمة، وهذه مصيبة، أمّا المصيبة العظمى فهي أن نهمل من خلفهم من الرواد أمثال أبي الخليل القباني في دمشق وعمر البطش وتلامذته في حلب، (ما ذهب جله لا يترك كله).
من هنا، انطلقت فكرة هذا الكتاب لتدوين تراثنا الموسيقي بدءاً من روّاد مدينة حلب، وفي مقدمتهم الموسيقار عمر البطش وتلامذته.
