هذه طبعة مختصرة من القاموس الإيطالي العربي الذي صدرت طبعته الكاملة عن الدار العربية للكتاب عام 1984، وقد كان النجاح الذي أحرزته هذه الطبعة والصدى الذي كان لها في الأوساط المعنية بالدراسات العربية الإيطالية والتنويه الذي نالته من المعنيين بدراسة اللغة الإيطالية والترجمة عنها من الأسباب التي حفزت الناشر إلى تقديم طبعة مختصرة له، تساعد طلاب المرحلة الوسطى على الإحاطة بالكلمات الأساسية في الحياة العامة، وقد توخى الناشر في هذا الاختصار توفير الأداة السهلة المبسطة التي تعني بالرصيد اللغوي الأساسي اللازم للتكوين.
ويحتوي هذا المختصر ما يقرب من نصف المادة اللغوية التي يضمها القاموس الكبير الذي ترك له تغطية المصطلحات العلمية والثقافية التي تتصل بأغلب فروع المعروف الحديثة، فهو بهذا المعنى قاموس وسيط يصلح لاستعمال المراحل الأولى والوسطى والراغبين في الاكتفاء بالرصيد اللغوي الأساسي دون تغلغل في المصطلحات أو توسع في الصفات والاشتقاقات.
