إذا ضاعت الأصول ضاع التاريخ، هذه قاعدة عامة لا موضع للجدال فيها، وذلك أن التاريخ لا يقوم إلا على الآثار التي خلقتها عقول السلف أو أيديهم، فإذا سطت محن الدهر أو عوادي الزمن على بعض هذه الآثار وأزالت معالمها، فقدها التاريخ وكانت كأنها لم توجد؛ وبفقدها يُجهل تاريخ عصرها ورجالها.
أما إذا بقيت وحُفظت، فقد حُفظ التاريخ فيها؛ لهذا يرى المؤرَخون لِزاماً في أَعناقهم، قبل كلّ شيء، أن يتفرغوا للبحث والتفتيش عن شتى الآثار التي تخلّفت عن السلف، والتي اصطلحنا أن نسمّيها "أصولاً".
من هذا ما قامت به الحكومة اللبنانيّة والمفوّضية الفرنسويّة في لبنان من حيث الحفريّات التي اجرتاها في مختلف انحاء هذا القُطر، والمحافظة على الآثار عموماً؛ ومن حيث نشرهما نتيجةَ أعمالهما، ونشرُ بعض الوثائق الفرنسويَة مما يمسّ علاقات بلادنا بفرنسة.
وأنّا لَنغتبط أن نرى حكومتنا الجليلة تتعاون الآن مع الجامعتين البيروتيتين، فتُعنى بنشر الأصول العربية لتاريخ لبنان في الأعصر الحديثة، وتبدأُ عملها هذا بنشر التاريخ الذي وضعه الأمير حيدر أحمد الشهابي الشملاني، وهو المرجع الأكبر لتاريخ لبنان في القرن الثامن عشر والثلث الأول من القرن التاسع عشر.
وغنيٌ عن البيان أن الأعمال العلمية الكبيرة لا تقوم إلا بمثل هذا التعاون، وأملنا أن لا يحول حائل دون نشر سائر الأصول العربية المهمة لتاريخ لبنان في المدة الأخيرة، كوثائق البطريركية المارونية في بكركي، وتاريخ الأمير فخر الدين المعني للصفدي، وتاريخ لبنان في عهد التنوخيين لأحمد بن سباط العاليهي، وكتاب الأزمنة للدويهي.
