ذكر فى هذا الكتاب ما وقفت عليه من أبيات الشعر المتراوح بين الرأفة واللين والشدة، السهل اللغة، الطيب المذاق، التى يصل الإحساس بها إلى العقل والقلب، من صدق معانيها وحلاوة وطلاوة ألفاظها. والتي وردت فهيا الحكمة والنصحية والمواعظة البالغة والمثل، فأصبح منها أبيات مشهورة سائرة، سارت على مر العصور مضرباً على ألسنة الناس. وعندما توكلت على الله، وشرعت فى العمل فى الكتاب، كنت أعجب بالبيت من الشعر فأسعى فى البحث عن قائله، إن لم يكن مذكورا، فكنت أوفق فى ذلك أحياناً فأنسب البيت غليه وأذكر اسمه، وأكمل الأبيات الناقصة إن وجدت وأحيانا أخرى كنت لا أوفق فى العثور على قائله. فكنت أكتفى بذكر بيت الشعر.
