منذ حداثتي آثرت الشعر من بين فنون الأدب, واشتد تعلقي به حتى أصبح أحب فنون القول إلي وأسبقها إلى قلمي... وقد رأت بواكيري الشعرية النور في الأربعينيات، حين نشرت بعض ما كتبت في الرسالة والثقافة وصحيفة دار العلوم، كما ألقيت بعض قصائدي في مهرجانات بمسرح الأزبكية والإذاعة المصرية، وندوة ناجي رحمه الله, وأوشك الشعر أن يصبح طريقي المحدد في دنيا الأدب... ثم تحول مساري بعض الشيء– أو اتسع– حين أوفدت– أول الخمسينيات– إلى إسبانيا للتخصص في البحث الأدبي ونيل درجة الدكتوراه في الأدب الأندلسي... فمنذ ذلك التاريخ أصبح البحث والدرس والنقد ميدان عملي الذي يأخذ القسم الأكبر من نشاطي، ولكن الشعر ظل– مع ذلك– يمثل حبي الأول الذي له نبض القلب وخفق الشعور ودفء الإفطاء!!! فكنت أقع تحت تأثير الطاغي كلما جاشت العاطفة بحدث وطني أو قومي، وكلما رفعت حرارة الوجدان تجربة نفسية أو روحية.
