تعب المواد هي الرواية الأولى من نوعها لكاتب تشيكي تعالج مسألة اللجوء إلى أوروبا وتصور اختزال حياة " الأجنبي " إلى مشكلة ، قوة عمل ، مادة ، هؤلاء الأجانب الذين اختُرعوا كأعداء إصطناعيين .
تكمن قوة نص شيندلكا في تصويره للتجارب التي يعيشها اللاجئون من ناحيتها الفيزيائية والجسدية ، حيث تستيقظ الغرائز الأولية في أشخاص الرواية عندما يتهدد الخطر حيواتهم .
يبرع شيندلكا في تصوير حركة كل عضلة وارتعاشة كل طرف وانتفاضة كل عصب ، كما يتفنن في تصوير آثار العناصر ، من ثلج وريح وجليد وغيوم ، وتحولاتها التي تطرأ وتتكرر دون أن تعير اهتماماً للبشر . تبدو هذه الأجزاء في الرواية وكأن لها بعداً وجودياً .
عندما سُئل شيندلكا عما يود أن يقول للقارىء العربي أجاب : " إن هذه هي روايتي الخاصة النابعة من تعاطفي مع الناس الهاربين من الموت ، وأيضاً من شعوري بالخجل من مواقف بعض الساسة التشيكيين ومن ضمنهم الرئيس التشيكي ، من أزمة اللجوء . نحن أنفسنا هربنا للغرب من النظام الشيوعي . نحن لاجئون سابقون . خاصة الكتاب هنا والمثقفون ، والفنانون ، ونخب المجتمع التشيكي . ويبدو لي مثيراً للحزن كيف أمكننا أن ننسى هذا بسرعة ، وكيف حوّلنا رغد عيشنا الأوروبي إلى لامُبالين ومتهكمين خالين من التعاطف الإنساني " .
تعب المعادن هي رواية جسدية ، رواية لا تخاطب العقل أو القلب بل الجسد بكل منعكساته العصبية وردات فعله التي دوماً ما تكون اسرع وأكثر صدقاً .
