من الغريب أننا نعني اليوم بطعامنا وشرابنا وملبسنا وقلما نعنى بأعصابنا، تلك الأعصاب التي أخذت تنهار تحت ضربات المدنية الحديثة فتسحقها عجلاتها سحقا. فقد انتزعت الآلة مكان الإنسان فأصبحنا اليوم ننتقل ونصنع ونزرع ونكتب ونحسب بل - بعد قليل - ونفكر، بالآلة، حتى أضحى الإنسان عبدا باختياره للآلة. لقد أخضعنا أخلاقنا وعواطفنا للمدنية الزائفة التي تقدم لنا كل مبتكرات العلم من راديو وتلفزة وطائرات وسيارات وغيرها من وسائل الراحة المادية ، بيد أنها لا تزيد في سعادتنا الروحية شيئا، بل إننا دفعنا ثمنها عللا وأمراضا واضطرابات عصبية ومخاوف وأوهاما .. لقد أفسدت علينا المدنية الحديثة حياتنا العقلية وشوهت حياتنا العاطفية فسلبتنا سعادتنا الروحية في مقابل لذاتنا المنتظمة الموقوتة.
