ظل مفهوم العنف في التراث الإسلامي مسيطراً على المشهد الدّيني والسّياسي لفترة طويلة من الزمن، وتم تسويق العنف عبر حزمة من المفاهيم الشرعيّة، مثل "الجهاد" و"القتال" و"الأمر بالمعروف والنهي عن المنكر" ونحوها من المفاهيم، وأصبح العنف بهذا التسويق عبر المفاهيم الدينيّة والإستخدام السياسي هو المهيمن على الرؤية الشرعية بعامة.
إلا أن هذه القراءة التبريرية للعنف عبر مفاهيم دينيّة، لقيت معارضة لها في القديم والحديث، وتجلّت قديماً في عدد من النصوص الدينية، وإجتهادات عدد من الفقهاء، وبالذات علماء الحجاز، الذين كانوا بعيدين عن "الثغور" والمناطق الساخنة على حدود الدولة الإسلاميّة.
من هنا جاء هذا الكتاب ليسلّط الضوء على هذا التيّار غير المشهور كثيراً في أواسط المتابعين والمهتمين بقضايا الإسلام والحركات الإسلاميّة، وليعرض لأهم المؤسسين والمؤصلين والداعين له، والإشكاليات التي أثارها طرح أو إحياء هذا التيار لمفهوم اللاعنف، وموقف المعارضين له؛ كما يبرز أيضاً الخبرات اللاعنفيّة العالميّة ومدى تأثيرها بتلك التي ازدهرت في العالم الإسلامي مؤخراً، وفي إطار نخبوي حتى الآن.
