يلقي كتاب أسرار تأسيس الرابطة القلمية أضواء كاشفة على نهضة الأدب العربي في الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية (الأدب المهجري) اعتبارها وليداً شرعياً للحراك السياسي والاجتماعي والثقافي الصاخب الذي كان دائراً هناك منذ مطلع القرن العشرين. فقد تميزت العشرين سنة الأولى من ذلك القرن بتصدي المؤسسات الرسمية الأمريكية لانتشار الأفكار التقدمية والحركات العمالية وشرائح المجتمع المهمشة المطالبة بالحدود الدنيا من حقوق المواطنة.
يعرض الكتاب لواقع الحركة الاشتراكية الأمريكية خلال الحرب العالمية الأولى وما بعدها ولمدى تأثر الأدباء العرب المهجريين بها. ويوثق الكتاب خطوات تأسيس الرابطة القلمية في نيويورك برئاسة جبران خليل جبران، وعضوية نخبة من أدباء المهجر مثل: ميخائيل نعيمة وإيليا أبي ماضي ونسيب عريضة، وما رافق التأسيس من صراخ خلف الكواليس بين أقطاب الحركة ومجتمع الجاليات السورية اللبنانية هناك. كما ويكشف الكتاب أسباب الخلاف السياسي الحاد بين أعضاء الرابطة من جهة وبين الأديب المهجري أمين الريحاني فيما يتعلق بشؤون المهجر والوطن الأم والفكر التقدمي.
ويتوصل الكتاب إلى أن تأسيس الرابطة القلمية جاء استجابة للميول الاشتراكية التي كانت لدى أعضائها سواء بإطلاعهم على هذا الفكر السياسي عن طريق كتابات الأدباء في الوطن أو مباشرة عن طريق الحراك السياسي اليساري في الولايات المتحدة آنذاك. كما يتناول الكتاب بالتحليل نتاج أدباء الرابطة القلمية بتوسع استخراجاً للأفكار والمعاني الاشتراكية المنتشرة فيه.
كتاب أسرار تأسيس الرابطة القلمية، نظرة فاحصة جديدة أخرجت الأدب العربي المهجري من إطار الرومنطيقية الشائعة عنه وعن أعلامه إلى حركة أدب الواقعية الاشتراكية.
