في كتابه "أم المعارك" يؤرخ الفريق الركن صلاح عبود محمود أحداث ووقائع ويوميات حرب الخليج عام 1991م، أسبابها ونتائجها وعن دوره في معاركها، بإعتباره قائد عسكري يؤدي واجبه الوطنين وبخاصة أنه قاد فيها معركة الخفجي والمعركة البرية والهجوم المقابل في البرقان، التي نفذتها قطعات الفيلق الثالث بدون غطاء جوي، وتحت تأثير رصد وقصف جوي مستمر لقوات التحالف وحرب نفسية قاسية.
وفي هذا السياق، ولأجل إظهار الحقيقة كما عرفها المؤلف من خلال قيادته للفيلق الثالث فيها، وخوض القسم الأكبر من معاركها، ولإظهار حقيقة مواقف الرجال الذين شاركوا فيها، قرر المؤلف أن يكتب عنها، مع ذكر للأحداث والفعالية والإجراءات التي اتخذت في ظلّ تلك الفترة، وهو ما سيجده القارئ في هذا الكتاب بالتفصيل في ثمان فصول وضعها المؤلف تلقي الضوء على أسباب حرب الخليج وهدف الأميركان منها والتخطيط لخوضها وإنجاز إستحضاراتهم لها حتى قبل فترة طويلة من إحتلال العراق للكويت، كما يلقي المؤلف الضوء على يوميات المعارك داخل الفيالق، وعلى أرض المعركة حتى عملية الإنسحاب من الكويت، والغاية كما يقول المؤلف "لكي يطلع القارئ الكريم على الحركة اليومية الضرورية للقائد العسكري وما سيواجهه أي قائد في حرب نظامية ضد عدو يملك قوة عسكرية متفوقة وأسلحة متطورة، وما ينبغي عليه عمله أثناء فترة التهيؤ للمعركة وخلالها..."، وأخيراً ملحق صور للأسلحة التي استخدمت في الحرب.
