كانت للواحات المصرية القديمة علامة بارزة على طريق جغرافية وجيولوجية مصر، أطلق المصريون القدماء على الواحة كلمة واحات التي حورت إلى واحة وهو المسمى الذي نستخدمه في العربية، ولعبت الواحات دوراً كبيراً في حركة التجارة بين مصر وجيرانها وخصوصاً السودان وليبيا، وشهدت أحداثاً مهمة، وأقيمت على أرضها عمائر ذات أهمية بالغة في تاريخ مصر، مثل: معبد الوحي في سيوة (الذي زاره الإسكندر الأكبر)، ومعبد هيبس في واحة الخارجة، وهو اكبر معابد الواحات قاطبة. ومعبد الإسكندر في الواحات البحرية ومدينة القصر الإسلامية في واحة الداخلة، ومقابر البجوات في واحة الخارجة، وتضم الواحات عشرات المواقع الثرية بالإضافة إلى المحميات الطبيعية والتنوع الهائل في طبيعة ولو الرمال والتلال والثراء في عيونالمياه، مما أضفى عليها أهمية بالغة.
