في مطلع عام 2014 أصدر الرئيس الروسي فلاديمير بوتين تعميمًا لسائر العاملين في إدارات الدولة الروسية يطلب منهم قراءة هذا الكتاب.
لكن هذا التعميم كان بمنزلة عملية سطو على فكر هذا الفيلسوف الذي طرده البلاشفة من روسيا.
كتب بردياييف كتابه هذا منذ مئة عام تقريبًا، في غمار الحوادث العاصفة للثورة الروسية. لم يتصدَّ الكاتب لتأريخ تلك الحوادث التي هزّت العالم، بل لمناقشة المقولات كلها التي استند إليها قادة تلك الثورة، وزجّوا روسيا باسمها في آتون حرب أهلية طاحنة. وكرّس بردياييف جهده الفكري طوال حياته في منفاه الفرنسي للنفاذ إلى أعماق النفس الروسية، بغية الكشف عن الميزات التي تفرّدت بها وجعلتها مهيّأة في عام 1917 لخوض تجربة "إعادة خلق آدم التوراتي من جديد"، وتكوين بديل منه في مختبرات الشيوعية البلشفية. يقول بردياييف إن لكل أمة تناقضاتها، لكن في روسيا وحدها تنقلب المقولة إلى مقولة مضادة.
