هذا الكتاب حول" شيخ الآزهر".. الموقع والدور- سواء الدور العلمي أو الفقهي أو الدور الإجتماعي ومن ثم السياسي ولم يكن الهدف التأريخ للأزهر ودوره، فهناك العديد من الدراسات قدمت الجانب التاريخي لهذه المؤسسات العريقة، ولم يكن الهدف الفخر والتباهي أو الحديث عن المناقب، ذلك أن المكتبة العربية بها الكثير والكثير من الكتابات تناولت هذا الجانب، وبالغت إلى حد تقديم العلماء باعتبارهم أساطير وليسوا أناساً يسعون في الأرض، بهم ما هو إيجابي ولديهم ما هو سلبي، ولم يكن الهدف- أخيراً- التفتيش بحثاً عن السلبيات وأوجه الخطأ أو جوانب القصور التي وقعت في لحظة ما، لكنه محاولة للفهم، تستند قدر الإمكان على الوقائع كما دونها المؤرخون والدارسون، لا تهويل ولا تهوين.
