لقد صار من فرض القول الحديث عن قضية المصطلحات، في الوقت الذي طغت فيه كلّ التخصصات العلمية، ولعلّها من أولى القضايا وأخطرها نظريا وتطبيقيا، طرحت في هذا الزمن الحديث وتزداد حدة الطرح مع مرور الزمن، وقد كانت ملتقى جهود عدد من الباحثين في العلوم المختلفة كاللسانيات وغيرها، تداخلت آراؤهم، وتضاربت أحيانا، وكان الشغل الشاغل لأغلبهم في هذه الأخيرة هو محاولة توحيد المصطلحات اللسانية وإيجاد الحلول النظرية في سبيل ذلك، مع تطبيقها على أرضية الدراسة والبحث، فكثرت المحاولات والاجتهادات في وضع المعاجم المتخصصة، أحادية ومتعددة اللغة.
ولكن مع غزارة الإنتاج المعجمي العربي يبقى النقص ظاهرا في عدة أوجه أهمها، التدقيق في مسألة التعريفات والتحديدات، خصوصاً إذا علمنا بالطابع العمومي الذي شمل هذه المسألة في العديد من القواميس والمعاجم كما يشهد واقع الحال بذلك.
وإذا كان الأمر كذلك مع المصطلحات اللسانية عمومًا، فإنَّ المصطلحات الصوتية خصوصًا لم تحظ حتى الوقت الراهن بمعاجم دقيقة تجمعها، في انتظار دراسات مصطلحية دقيقة في مفهومها ودلالاتها وتعريفاتها.
فكان هدفنا الأول في كتابنا هذا هو السعي إلى تحديد دقيق لماهية المصطلحات الصوتية، والتقليل من حدة الفوضى المفهومية السائدة، وذلك بالرجوع إلى دلالاتها الأصلية في الوضع والاستعمال.
وإننا في هذا الموضوع نرغب في تقديم الجديد، لكنه ليس جديداً ينبني على هدم القديم والتقليل من قيمته، إنما هو محاولة الإسهام في ملء الفراغ الذي تعاني منه مكتبتنا العربية.
