الكتابُ الذي مِن الجيِّد أنَّ القارئ، بعدَ أن يُغلقَه، حسبَ توطئة المُترجم، قد يتأخَّرُ قليلاً قبل أن يصل إلى خُلاصةٍ حول مغزاه وقيمته. سوف يسمع، حينئذٍ، فيضاً من أصواتٍ واهنةٍ وثقيلةٍ تتآلفُ في انسجامٍ مُغْرٍ وحزينٍ؛ وسوف يرى غُمَارةً من بقعٍ لونيَّةٍ، بقعٍ كانت تبدو له من قبلُ وكأنَّها أُلقيَتْ عشوائيَّاً، تلتئمُ عند الحوافِّ وتشكِّل لوحةً. الألوان الابتدائيَّةُ والصَّريحةُ التي كانت تبدو لنا، طوالَ قراءتنا الكتابَ، متجاورةً، سوف تُعَدِّلها ذاكرتنا.
يُهيْمِن على لغة غوتْسانو الشِّعريَّة كآبةٌ وإحساسٌ بالموت، ولكنَّ فيها أيضًا رغبةً رومانسيَّةً في الفرح والحب لا تلبث أن تصطدم بالحقيقة اليوميَّة لمرضِه، وبيأسٍ مرير. وممّا جاء في التوطئة التي كتبها جوزِبِّهْ أنطونيو بورغيزِهْ في باريس العام 1917: "…بعد قرونٍ من تثبيت القَدَم في تربة الوطن، ومن العصبيَّة المحلِّيَّة التي لا تخلو من رائحة الثُّوم، هيَ ذي إيطاليا الجديدة والمتعطِّشة لكلِّ جديدٍ، إيطاليا اليابانيَّة قليلاً لقلقها من المستقبل، والأمريكيَّة قليلاً لازدرائها القيود التَّقليديَّة. هناك، بالفِعل، إرهاصةُ مستقبليَّةٍ في هذا السَّفر لأجل السَّفر، في هذه الرِّحلةِ المختلفةِ كلِّيَّاً عن الرِّحلات الحميمة والنَّفسيَّة للرُّومانسيِّين، في هذه الارتيادات الاستكشافيَّةِ للشَّمال والشَّرق، للعواصم الضَّبابيَّة وجبهاتِ القتال. لم تُسهم أسرابٌ من الرَّحَّالة وكِبارِ المراسلين الصَّحفيِّين، بعد عودتهم إلى ديارهم، في إدخال الويسكي والصُّودا وآلة الحلاقة الأوتوماتيكيَّة فحسب، بل أسهمَتْ أيضاً في إدخال عددٍ معيَّنٍ من الانطباعات الجديدة والأفكار المرنة التي كانت مفيدةً لتركيز انتباهنا جيِّداً على الهدف، وكذلك في إدخال عددٍ معيَّنٍ من الكلمات الفتيَّة، والصُّوَر اللَّاذعة، والمجازفات النَّحويَّة التي جعل منها الأسلوبُ التَّجريبيُّ للمدارس الشِّعريَّة الجديدة آنذاك فضاءً للعربدة، وإنْ كانت ستعطي بعض الثِّمار الجيِّدة في شِعر الغد".
