حدثت فتنة العجل في سنين التيه الأربعين التي تاه فيها بنو إسرائيل في صحراء سيناء، عقوبة لتمردهم على الأوامر الإلهية، وإصلاحاً لما فسد في نفوسهم، حيث واعد الله سبحانه وتعالى موسى عليه السلام ثلاثين ليلة ثم أتمها بعشر، قال تعالى: "وواعدنا موسى ثلاثين ليلة وأتمناها بعشرٍ فتم ميقات ربه".
وفي هذه الليالي الأربعين استغل السامري غياب موسى عليه السلام، وقام بصياغة عجل من الحلي وألقى السامري في هذا العجل حفنة تراب أخذها من تحت حافز فرس جبرائيل عليه السلام، فخرج العجل الجسد له خوار، أي صوت كصوت العجل الحي، قال موسى عليه السلام: (يارب، العجل من السامري فالخوار ممن؟ قال: مني يا موسى، إني لما رأيتهم قد ولوا عني إلى العجل أحببت أن أزيدهم فتنة"، وهنا قال لهم السامري هذا إلهكم وإله موسى، حتى أن الكثير من بني إسرائيل صدقه...
هذه الحادثة يجدر بكل مسلم أن يتدبرها ويدرسها، وهو ما فعله مؤلف الكتاب الذي سيجيب عن أسئلة مثل: من هو السامري؟ وهل كان عالماً من علماء بني إسرائيل؟ وهل كان متعبداً ناسكاً؟ وهل كان السامري مجاهداً؟ وما معنى تفسير الآية (فإستغاثه الذي من شيعته) فإذا كان المقصود بها السامري فهذا يعني أن السامري مجاهداً، لأنه قاتل جنود الطاغية فرعون في مصر قبل بعث موسى عليه السلام... الكثير من المعاني والتفسيرات الواردة في هذه الواقعة، وغياب موسى، وفتنة العجل عند بني إسرائيل سنجد الإجابة عليها في هذاالكتاب.
