تجمع قصص «من حكايا الجدّة» للقاص "أحمد إسماعيل زين" بين الطابع الأسطوري من حيث بعدها التكويني القائم على الخرافة وبين الطابع الفولكلوري التراثي الشعبي الذي تنتمي إليه. يرجع خلالها القاص "أحمد إسماعيل زين" إلى جذور الأساطير في منطقة شبه الجزيرة العربية واليمن، ويستدعي شخصيات من الإنس والجن والحيوان والطير، تلك التي تُعرف بالمغامرة والتحدي وركوب الأهوال والمصاعب، فتتناسل الحكايات واحدة تلو الأخرى لتشكل نسيجاً فريداً تسهم الذاكرة الجماعية في صنعه، بتقنية راوٍ عليم يجوب أماكن واقعية ومتخيلة، وبسردٍ يستخدم صيغة السرد اللاحق لروي ما هو مألوف في الماضي، بعد الإيحاء بأن هذا الحدث الغريب قد انتهى، ما يعني بالنهاية أن ما حُكي في الماضي من قصص شعبي يمنح للقاص حرية ابتداع صور غرائبه، وإيصالها إلى متلقي لا يلفت نظره سوى التميّز.
قدم لهذه للمجموعة القصصية بقراءة نقدية الأستاذ عمر طاهر زيلغ ومما جاء فيها: "... في الغالب تجد الحكاية الشعبية تكتمل ذاتياً فتؤدي بك إلى سرد له بداية ونهاية، بينما يعمد البناء الفني في القص إلى استنهاض همة القارئ لملء الفراغ واستكمال النهايات استنتاجاً أو حدساً، وربما اعتسافاً أيضاً.
وضعنا صاحب المجموعة أمام إشكالية أو ما يشبهها، فهو لم يكتب معظم هذه النصوص، بل كتب نهايات لها حولت طبيعة الحكي ومساره إلى عمل مفتوح على احتمالات عديدة. من جهة أخرى يتجاوز الكاتب في هذه المجموعة سياقه السردي السابق في مجموعتيه: (زامر الحي)، و: (أصداء الأزقة). لا من حيث مكونات السرد بينهما وهذه المجموعة وحسب، بل ومن حيث تركيز النهايات وكثافتها، وتماسك البناء، وتجانس الجمل وثراء المفردات ومهارة السرد في الأخيرة.
في حكاية (النباش) كسر الكاتب عنصرها الخرافي بنسبة أكل جثث الموتى إلى كائن خرافي يدعى: (النباش)، فأشار في نهايتها بأصبع الاتهام إلى الحفار نفسه الذي ينبش القبور لكي يجمع الأكفان لينتفع بها أو بأثمانها (...)".
