الحكايات الشعبية أو كما نسميها باللهجة المحلية (الحزى ومفردها حزاية) فن من الفنون الأدبية الشفهية للمجتمعات منذ القدم، وهي نوع من الإبداع الفكري للإنسان في فترة لم يتواجد فيها أي نوع من الاتصال الإعلامي سواء مرئياً أو مقروءاً أو مسموعاً، فكانت الحكايات وسيلة للتواصل بين الأجيال لتربط الحاضر بالماضي.
وتستمد الحكايات الشعبية قصصها من البيئة المحلية الظفارية، وظفار هي الجزء الجنوبي من سلطنة عمان التي تقع في الجنوب الشرقي من الجزيرة العربية.
فقد جاءت تلك الحكايات ملائمة ومواكبة الظروف البيئية والثقافية لذلك العصر، فتبين هذه الحكايات الحياة البسيطة بمختلف أنواع المهن والمستويات الاقتصادية، حيث جاءت المفاهيم المرتبطة بالحياة الاجتماعية متدرجة لتصل إلى أعلى مستوى اجتماعي يمثل قوة المال والسلطة معاً، وهو الأمر الذي يتكرر ترميزه في معظم الحكايات.
