اعتمدنا فى تصحيح هذا الكتاب على نسخة مخطوطة من كتب المرحوم الأستاذ الشنقيطى الكبير محفوظة بدار الكتب المصرية تحت رقم 6 أدب ش ضمن مجموعة تشتمل على جملة دواوين، وقد كتب عليها مالكها وواقفها ما نصه: "ملك هذا المجموع الفائق الرائق المشتمل على جملة وافرة من دواوين العرب العرباء اولها هذا (أى ديوان حسان بن ثابت) وواحد وثلاثون من دواوين شعراء هذيل، وديوان لبيد، وديوان الشماخ، وديوان الأعشى، وديوان ذى الرمة، وديوان ابن الدمينة، وديوان سراقة البارقى، محمد محمود بن التلاميد التركزى الشنقيطى المدنى ثم المكى، ثم وقفه على عصبته بعده كسائر كتبه وقفا مؤبداً، فمن بدله أو غيره فإثمه عليه والله تعالى حسيبه، وكتبه مالكه واقفه محمد محمود سنة ثلاث وتسعين ومائتين وألف".
وديوان الهذلين المشتملة عليه هذه المجموعة ليس من خط الشنقيطى وإن كان مكتوبا كله بالخط المغربى. وقد ضبط جميع ما فيه من الشعر ضبطا حسنا فى أكثر الأحيان، وفى حواشيه شروح وتعليقات كتبها الأستاذ الشنقيطى بالخط المغربى الدقيق. وقد يقع فى ألفاظ هذه الشروح تحريف وتصحيف، وتقديم وتأخير، وزيادة ونقص يضطرب به المعنى أحيانا، أو تكرار بغير مقتض. وهذه الشروح هى التى أثبتناها فى هذا الديوان بعد كل بيت ما كتب عليه.
