لقد تناولت الإسهامات المبكرة في علوم القرآن مناهج وآليات شرح المعاني القرآنية الدقيقة والغامضة أو ما يعرف بمشكلات النص الدلالية والبلاغية بالدراسة عن طريق الحديث عن الأنواع أو المباحث التي تعالج تلك المشكلات، ولقد كان لابن قتيبة (ت276هـ) فضل السبق في تناول تلك المشكلات وشرح مفاهيمها في كتابه (تأويل مشكل القرآن) الذي ألّفه للرد على الطاعنين في النص القرآني، وقد وقف عند القضايا المشكلة فيه دافعاً التهم واحدة تلو الأخرى، فقد بادر في صدر كتابه إلى بيان وجه الإعجاز القرآني، ثم بين أسرار النظم القرآني وما فيه من المعاني البلاغية التي تعتمد على دقّة التعبير وإجادة التصوير بأسلوب يثير الخيال ويحفّز على العمل، وقد ذكر منها الإيجاز الذي هو التعبير عن المعاني الكثيرة بدقة وعمق بألفاظ قليلة، وتحدث عن هذه المعاني البلاغية بتوسع في باب القول في المجاز، وباب الاستعارة، وباب المقلوب، وباب الحذف والاختصار، وباب الكناية والتعريض، وباب مخالفة ظاهر اللفظ معناه، وهو ما يعدل ثلث الكتاب تقريباً، وتحدث عن المتشابه، وتحدث عن موهم الاختلاف والتناقض، وتحدث عن وجوه القراءات.
