يبدو أن ديوان "التقويم" أقرب أعمال "أوفيديوس" إلى أخلاق النظام الأوغسطى وميوله . لقد سار على خطى بروبرتيوس فى "إليجاته الرومانية"، حيث كرس نفسه لتأليف أشعار مدنية.
لقد حاول "أوفيديوس" فى هذا الزى الجديد أن يقدم، كشاعر يحتفى بعظمة روما، أبحاثاً ذات طابع ثقافى فى الكثير من من المصادر التراثية القديمة. وقد استمد مادته من فرويس فلاكوس وآخرين، وبذلك جنى محصولاً وفيراً من المعلومات فى مجال الآثار والديانة والقانون والفلك، التى وظفها ليوضح المعتقدات والطقوس وأسماء الأماكن من أجل إعادة إكتشاف الأصول القديمة، وهو ما يعد من الاتجاهات الأساسية للفكر الأوغسطى.
ويعتبر ديوان التقويم مؤلفاً متعدد الوجوه، إذ يشتمل على تأثيرات من الشعر الهللينستى والشعر الإليجى العاطفى والشعر الملحمى والأحداث التاريخية.
