لم يحصل نجم على أى تعليم نظامى، وليست له أى مهنة معروفة عدا كونه شاعر عامية مشهوراً، يبدو لنا فناناً بوهيمياُ تاره ورجلاً "فاجوميا" "سليط اللسان" تاره أخرى.
وهو شاعر ينظم بعامية مواطنية مستخدماً الأشكال الفلكلورية فى أشعاره، وعلى عكس شعر الفصحى نجد شعر نجم عالمى يقترب إلى قلب وعقل الغالبية العظمى من مواطنيه المصريين. حيث أن شعره مستمد من لغة الشاعر المعبرة عن حكمة وسخرية الأمة المصرية. إلا أنه لا يستخدم التراث الشعبى بطريقة آلية ولا لكى يسترضى الجماهير فهو يمزج التراث الشعبى بصوته الحديث والثورى ويشحن بطارية الموروث بتيار الحداثة والثورية والالتزام بقضايا الفقراء والمحرومين. وإذا كان الموروث الثقافى يحض العامة على التصالح مع مواقعهم وقدرهم فى الحياة - ولو كانت مأساوية - فإن أشعار نجم تحتفل بقدوم بلاغة جديدة، بلاغة بديلة تنفض عن جسدها قدرية التراث وتقاليده البالية وكذلك تهويمات الأدب النخبوى.
