من هذا المنطلق جاء الإهتمام الباحث الدكتور "محمد سالم الدرويش" من جامعة الإسكندرية للبحث في جانب من جوانب هذه اللغة العظيمة، ألا وهو "علم العروض والقافية"، لذلك سمى كتابه هذا بـ"المساعد في علم العروض والقافية".
يتناول الكاتب في كتابه كل ما يدور حول العروض والقافية، ابتداءً من المبادئ الأساسية في علم العروض، مروراً بالبحور الشعرية والدوائر العروضية منتهياً بالقافية، وما يدور حولها من دروس.
ولما كان الجانب النظري لا يتم إستيعابه إلا إذا كان مفرزاً بالجانب التطبيقي، فقد أكثر الكاتب من الأمثلة والشواهد الشعرية، بغية تلمس الوسائل والطرق الصحيحة للدراسين، وجعل مادة علم العروض بعيدة عن التعقيد وفي متناول الطلبة والدارسين؛ أما ما تعنيه كلمة عروض إصطلاحاً: "هو علم يعرف به صحيح أوزان الشعر العربي من فاسدها، وما يصيبها من زحافات وعلل".
يفيد هذا الكتاب الطلبة في المدارس والأساتذة المختصين باللغة العربية وكذلك طلاب الجامعات من ذوي الإختصاص فهو يقدم مادة دسمة في علم العروض بجميع جوانبها مع إيراد أمثلة وتمارين ومحاولة الإجابة عنها، لذلك جاء إقتناء هذا الكتاب بمثابة جهد "المعلم" في الصف فهو يطل على جميع بحور الشعر الخمسة عشرة وأوزانها الشعرية، وكيفية الكتابة العروضية.
