فى حين كثرت الدراسات الأثارية عن المدارس فى العراق وبلاد الشام ومصر لاعتبارات مختلفة، بقيت المدارس فى بلاد الغرب الإسلامي بحاجة ماسة إلى تغطيتها بالدراسة والبحث لاستكمال الرؤية الحضارية والعمرانية والمعمارية، وعن دور هذه المدارس فى تاريخ الحضارة الإسلامية في إطار عام، وعن أنماطها المعمارية في إطار خاص بالدراسات الآثارية التى تعنى بالجوانب المعمارية. وفى سبيل تلبية هذه الحاجة كانت دراسة المدارس المغربية فى العصر المرينى التى يعنى بها هذا الكتاب ليقدم لنا توثيقاً معمارياً دقيقاً للشكل المعماري الذى كانت عليه هذه المدارس، وما بقي من وحداتها وعناصرها المعمارية وهذه الدراسة التوثيقية تكاد تكون الأولى فى مستواها، وهي أيضا دراسة ثرية بعديد من أدوات وأساليب التوثيق، ويرجع ذلك لاعتبارات مهمة منها الاستفادة من الأدبيات الواردة فى المصادر والوثائق والنصوص التأسيسية، وكذلك الوصف المعمارى الدقيق وتوضيح كل وحدة وعنصر معمارى بالرسم المعمارى والزخرافى والصور الفوتوغرافية. واستكمالاً لهذا العمل الجيد كانت الدراسة التحليلية التى اتخذت أبعاداً مختلفة تقوم أساساً على الرصد الدقيق والملاحظة الواعية، ومن هذه الأبعاد البعد التأصيلي والبعد المقارن مع مدارس شرق الإسلامي، وإبراز جوانب التميز والانفراد ومحاولة تفسير هذه الجوانب قدر الطاقة.
