كان التأليف في أيام العرب وحروبها أحد الجوانب التي طرقها المؤرخون والإخباريون في تراثنا الإسلامي، ومنهم هشام بن محمد الكلبي الذي كان له كتاب مشهور في ذلك بقيت منه مخطوطة معروفة في بداية القرن العشرين، لكنها فقدت مما استدعى جمع مابقى من مادته المفقودة من المصادر.
جمع المحقق مابقى من أيام متناثرة برواية ابن الكلبي، وقام بتحقيقها ومعارضتها على الروايات الأخرى الواردة عن أيام العرب خاصة رواية معاصره أبي عيدة معمر بن المثنى، التي جمعت منذ فترة بالإضافة إلى بقية مستلزمات التحقيق من تخريج وضبط وغير ذلك.
هذا الكتاب يمثل إضافة للمكتبة التراثية كونه كتاباً مفقوداً لأهم الإخباريين القدامى، كما أنه يعنى بحقل من حقول تاريخ العرب قبل الإسلام اندثرت المؤلفات التي كتبت فيه وهو أيام العرب، كذلك هو إضافة إلى حركة نشر التراث المجموع والمخطوط الذي نسعى إلى إبراز معالمه.
