كتاب أيام محمد على تأليف محمد حاكم يتناول الكتاب بالدراسة وبالوثائق حياة المدينة والقرية في أيام محمد علي وما يشوبها من اختلاف كبير أدى إلى نشوء فكرة الطبقية من خلال التمايز الإجتماعي الذي كان يحدث وقتها والفرق الذي صنعته القوانين التي سنّت وقتها في توزيع فرص الحياة بين الفلاح ومن يرأسه ومن يرأس مرؤسه حتى نصل إلى أعلى الطبقات وذلك من خلال التوزيع الغير عادل للأرض ومواردها مما أوجد في المجتمع طبقة المعدمين ثم يطرح المؤلف العلاقة الحديثة والاختلاف بين مفهوم القرية والمدينة ،ذلك الخلاف الذي وقع فيه علم الإجتماع من فرضية أنهما وحدتين إجتماعيتين مستقلتين ومنفصلتين ،كما يقدم الكتاب في مباحثه فكرة إستحواذ المدينة وسيطرتها على القرية من خلال وسائل الإنتاج وعلاقات السلطة وإستبعاد المواطن البسيط أوالمعدم من الخطاب العلمي والإستشراقي والحكومي . يحاول محمد حاكم في هذه الدراسة أن يقدم قراءة تعتمد على الوثائق والمصادر التاريخية المعاصرة من مدخل سوسيولوجي، قراءة نستمع فيها لأصوات الناس لا لصوت الباشا، وهو يرصد الأسس الاجتماعية للحظة التاريخية لتأسيس الحداثة الشائهة التي نعيشها إلى الآن
