عالج الكتاب الذي لا يخفي طموحه، معنى الفن، والرسم منه خاصة، قائلاً بفكرتين جوهريتين: الفن حرية، يصادر ولا يمكن إعتقاله، فهو ضرورة روحية، تواجه القائم بما يمكن أن يكون، والفن الذي هو شكل خاص من (اللعب) قديم وبالغ القدم، منذ أن رسم الإنسان على جدران الكهوف.
بيد أن ما يجعل الفن ظاهرة إجتماعية، له مؤسساته وأعرافه، مرتبط بالعلاقات الإجتماعية، التي تؤمن له شروطه الضرورية أو تمنعها عنه، بدءاً بحرية الأنا المفردة التي تبدع ولا تحاكي، وصولاً إلى جمهور يعرف الفن ويعترف به، ويتمتع بثقافة لا ترى الفن (َإضافة هجينة) إلى المجتمع، ذلك أن التعامل مع الأعمال الفنية يقتفي تربية فنية، لها مراجعها الواسعة في المناهج المدرسية، والمتاحف وفي تكريم المتخيل الطليق.
