العبودية أو الرق، تلك المصطلحات التي تتنافى مع أبسط حقوق الإنسان المخلوق حراً بالفطرة، غير أن نقيض تلك الحرية، أقرّته على ما يبدو، ذات الفطرة البشرية، لإعتبارات تتعلق بالتسلط وحب المال والظلم، والتي غالباً ما يعزز فرص إنتشارها خضوع الطرف الأضعف، وقد وُجد الرّق تحت أشكال متنوعة ومختلفة منذ القدم، وليس غريباً القول بأن معظم الطوائف التي ملكت الرقيق إنصفت بالثراء والسلطة، فأخضعت ضحايا الرق روحاً وجسداً للتبعية التامة لأسيادهم.
وقد شكل العبيد على مدار التاريخ مصدراً زهيد الكلفة لجميع الخدمات والأعمال الأساسية التي زادت من ثراء طبقة الملاك والإقطاعيين وكبار التجار، فمن خدمة المنازل إلى عمال المزارع والمناجم وبيادق الحروب العسكرية، وغيرها من الأنشطة الأخرى التي وصلت في كثير من الحالات حد الجنون، حيث كان العبيد في أثينا وروما القديمة، يستخدمون كطرائد بشرية في مواجهة الأسود والضواري المفترسة في حلبات المصارعة، فقط من أجل الترفيه والتسلية!...
وقد شكلت العبودية السمة المشتركة في العصور البشرية الأولى (3500- 476 قبل الميلاد) والعصور الوسطى (476- 1453) والحديثة (1453- 1789)، ففي مصر القديمة واليونان والصين والهند وبلاد فارس وشبه الجزيرة العربية كان الرقيق حياة يمكن بكل بساطة سلبها، أما في حالة إستخدامهم كقوى عاملة فلم يتعدى الأمر إعتبارهم سلعاً تباع وتشترى.
