تتناول هذه الدراسة حياة الشاعر علي عبد الله خليفة وظاهرة البحر في شعره في الفترة الممتدة بين عامي (1944-1998م) ، وتكمن أهمية هذه الفترة في بيان الظروف التي ساهمت في وجود شاعر بين الشعراء المعاصرين في جزيرة البحرين، ثم نشأته، وصلته ودراسته وسائر أعماله دون فصل بين إنتاجه الأدبي وحياته، ولا سيما المرتبط بالبحر وذلك في دراسة تركز على اثر البحر في هذه التجربة.
في الكتاب سيجد القارىء أن علي عبد الله خليفة يبدع نوعاً متميزاً من أدب البحر، هو الغوص على اللؤلؤ. وقد خصه بقصائد كثيرة في أعماله التي أصدرها فيما سبق، وقد برز البحر بألفاظه ورموزه وصوره في دواوين الشاعر بالفصحى: (أنين الصواري) في ست عشرة قصيدة، فضلاً عن وروده في سياق موضوعات إجتماعية ووجدانية، وفي (إضاءة لذاكرة الوطن) احتل البحر إحدى عشرة قصيدة في سياق موضوعات وطنية قومية ووجدانية. أما في (وداع السيدة الخضراء) ، فقد برز البحر في سياق موضوعات وجدانية وفكرية فقط.
وفي الدراسة ايضاً، إشارة إلى افراد عائلة الشاعر وطفولته ونشأته وصلته بالبيئة المحيطة ولا سيما البحر، فضلاً عن وصف حياة شظف العيش والمعاناة.
وبناءً على ما تقدّم استقرت الدراسة في أربعة فصول يتناول الفصل الأول حياة الشاعر ونشاطه الأدبي، ويدرس الفصل الثاني أهمية الغوص في شعر علي عبد الله خليفة ويتعرّض لرحلة الغوص وشخصياتها وأعمالها ومخاطرها، وآثارها المعنوية. ويشير الفصل الثالث إلى موضوع البحر وعناصره في شعر الشاعر خليفة، حيث بدأ البحر في (أنين الصواري) كحقيقة ثم تحول إلى رمز يعبّر عن قضايا إجتماعية ووطنية وقومية، ثم اصبح ذا دلالات ومعانٍ ذات صلة بروح الشاعر وأحاسيسه وفلسفته في الحياة. أما الفصل الرابع فيركز على الخصائص الفنية لشعر علي عبد الله خليفة المرتبط بالبحر ومنها الإرتباط بالبحر، والمؤثرات الإنسانية والإتجاه العامي، والمواطن التي وردت فيها صور البحر، والموسيقى الشعرية في إنتاج الشاعر. وكل ذلك يأتي للتأكيد على صلة الشاعر بالبحر وأثره في حياته وإنتاجه الأدبي.
