يضم هذا الكتاب بحث عن عبد الله بن رواحة، الشاعر المخضرم، والمجاهد الفارس المؤمن، تناول الحديث عن سيرته وشعره، بعد أن جمع المؤلف هذا الشعر من مصادره المختلفة حتى صنع منه ديواناً.
وعبد الله بن رواحة أنصاريّ خزرجيّ فارس، وهو شاعر حجازيّ يثربيّ مخضرم، عاش في الجاهلية، وشارك قومه في أيامهم ووقائعهم وحروبهم، فكان سيداً من ساداتهم، وفارساً من فرسانهم، دافع عنهم بشعره وسيفه، ثم جاء الإسلام فكان من السابقين الأولين إليه، وسرعان ما جند هذه الطاقة في خدمة الإسلام، فكان جندياً مخلصاً من جنوده الباسلين الشجعان، وصحابياً جليلاً من أصحاب رسول الله - صلى الله عليه وسلم - شهد معه جميع الغزوات والوقائع، لم يتخلف عن واحدة منها، ثم ختم حياته بأشرف ما تُختَم به حياةُ مصابر مؤمن، اصطفاه الله تعالى شهيداً في يوم مؤتة.
وقد قسم هذا البحث إلى قسمين، فأما القسم الأول فكان دراسة في سيرة ابن رواحة وشعره، وأما القسم الثاني فهو الديوان الذي جمعه المؤلف من المصادر والمظانّ المختلفة، وقد عرض بين يديّ الديوان تمهيداً تحدث فيه عن مصادر شعر ابن رواحة، وعن منهج الجمع والتحقيق الذي اتبعه.
