حاولت في الصفحات الأولى من الكتاب، أن أفسر معنى التطور مذهبياً وديالكتيكياً، أكثر من التفسير الإصطلاحي، لأن التفسير الإصطلاحي لمعنى التطور يجده القراء في كافة المؤلفات التي تتحدث عن التطور بمعناه الإصطلاحي سواء أكان في الآداب والفنون أو في معامل البحوث التكنولوجية، وحاولت أن أبسط معناه حين انتقلت أوروبا من الكتابة بلغة الإنجيل إلى اللغات الوطنية وحين عملت حركة الطباعة على إنتشار الوعي الثقافي خارج الكنيسة وهو ما اصطلح عليه بــ (الإصلاح الديني) أو (النهضة خارج مدينة الفاتيكان) وكشفت عن ذلك أيضاً بحركة الإصلاح الديني الكنسي في إنكلترا وإنشقاق الكنيسة على سلطة البابا بسبب غراميات الملك هنري وتراكم الثروة في إنكلترا أدى إلى ثورة الريسانس، وكنت أقصد من ذلك الكشف عن الجذور الأولى للتطور خارج النهضة العربية، وحاولت أن أثبت أن التاريخ الإنساني للمخترعات توقف عند عصر الزجاج والحديد، وظل في ركود بفضل إنتشار نظام الرقيق والعبيد الذين كانوا يقفون كسدٍ ومانع في تقدم العلوم، لأنهم أصلاً كانوا يقومون مقام الآلة والإختراع.
لذلك كان يخسر الشرق في كل يوم ويكسب الغرب على حساب خسارة الشرق، وقد ساعدت هذه الحركة التجارية على تمويل حركة العلم والثقافة في الجزء الغربي من العالم المتحضر هذا اليوم، وتطوراً وألقوا عن كاهلهم أكثر من 1500 عام من الحكم الكنسي، وهم مطمئنون للعلم والتنوير، وبمقابل ذلك بقي الشرق العربي يكابد ويعاني من الحياة القديمة حتى اليوم، وهو في هذه الحالة غير مطمئنٍ للجديد ويتشوق دائماً إلى القديم لأنه لم يحرز أي تقدم علمي وصناعي تنتقل به القرى القديمة إلى مدنٍ صناعية لها شكلٌ جديد يتمرد به النظام الحديث على نظام الأسرة والقبيلة والعشيرة، ويفتح ذراعيه للعائلة النووية الجديدة ولمؤسسات المجتمع المدني.
وحاولت أن أبرهن على عوامل نهضة الشرق المتواضعة بفضل ما قام به المسيحيون في بلاد الشام من إنشاء المطابع قبل حملة نابليون على مصر وعلى إنشاء المجلات بعد حملة نابليون على مصر.
