كانت حقبة 1954- 1958 التى سبقت الوحدة من أقسى الحقب على سورية تجاه ما واجهته من مخططات ومؤامرات تمثلت فى التدخل فى شؤونها ومحاولة فرض الهيمنة على شعبها وأرضها. ثم بلغ التنافس على سورية مداه فى هذه الفترة بين شرائح اليسار والناصرية المدعومة من السوفيات والقاهرة, وبين الجول الغربية وأحزاب اليمين فى سورية, فدفعت بسورية إلى الوحدة مع مصر دفعا, لتنجو بنفسها من غزو وشيك, لكن الوحدة التى قامت فى ظروف مليئة بالأخطاء الفادحة, لم تنقذ سورية من المصير المحتوم, جراء الأخطاء القاتلة التى شارك فيها السوريون والمصريون جميعا, فهربت إلى الانفصال عن مصر, تنشد النجاة, فإذا بها تقع فريسة سهلة أمام الناصريين الذين انقضوا عليها من مصر ولبنان ومن داخل سورية, ومن اليسار والشيوعيين والاشتراكيين المدعومين من السوفيات والدول الشيوعية الأخرى, فى الوقت الذى كان فيه قادتها وساستها يتصارعون على المكاسب الرخيصة العاجلة, لينتهى الحال بالأرض الطيبة والقطر الجميل إلى النفق المظلم, والوقوع بين أنياب ومخالب تنظيم سرى باطنى حاقد, عملت فيه معاول الهدم منذ أربعين عاما ونيف, ولا تزال.
