يُعَدُّ "متن الغاية والتقريب" أو "متن أبي شجاع" من أكثر متون الفقه الشافعي تداولاً وأهمها، ومن أهمِّ شروحه هذا الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا "الإقناع" فقد جاء شرحه أقرب إلى الطول، فقد قال عنه الغزي: وله على "الغاية" شرحٌ مطول حافلٌ.
مع أن الخطب لم يملَّ في وصف كتابه بأنَّه "مختصرٌ"، فهو يعرف فيه بالكتب، ثم يحلل الألفاظ شرحاً وضبطاً كما يبين مرجع الضمير في المتن، ويذكر معتمد المسألة من كتابٍ أو سنةٍ معزوا إلى مخرجها غالباً.
والكتاب غنيٌ أيضاً بالتنبيهات والفوائد والفروع التي جاء فيها لقوَّة ملكة الشربيني الفقهيَّةِ وكونه قريب عهد بنا، مسائل قد تسمَّى معاصرةً أو تخرجُ عليها، والكتابُ شاملٌ لأبوابِ الفقهِ من العباداتِ والمعاملات والجناياتِ والفرائضِ.
ولعلَّ أهمية "الإقناع" تكمُنُ أنه أتى بعد أن شرح مؤلِّفه "التنبيه" لأبي إسحاق الشيرازيِّ، وكذلك "المنهاج" للنَّوويِّ، ثم أتى "الإقناع" كمختصرٍ للشرحين السابقين، بل خلاصةً لهما، فهو يُحيلُ دائماً لطالبِ التَّوسُّعِ لشرحيه المذكورين.
مصنف هذا الكتاب هو القاضي أبو شجاع أحمد بن حسين الأصفهاني العبّادانيّ الشافعي، ولد في البصرة عام 433 هــ/1041م ، وقد كان إماماً ناسكاً وعابداً صالحاً واشتهر في الآفاق بالعلم والديانة. تولى الوزارة سنة 447 هـــ/1055م ، فنشر العدل والدين. قد درس القاضي أبو شجاع مذهب الإمام الشافعي بما يزيد عن أربعين سنة ثم أقام بالمدينة المنورة يكنّس المسجد النبوي الشريف ويفرش الحصر...ولا يعرف له تأليف غير كتاب "غاية الاختصار" وهو من أبدع ما صنف في مختصر الفقه، وأجمع ما ألف فيه على مقدار حجمه.
