لقد تتبع المؤلف تطور في هذا الكتاب النظرية النقدية إلى مفهوم الخطاب النثري وأجناسه عند مختلف النقاد من نهاية القرن الرابع الهجري، مع تحليل آرائهم، وإستنطاق نصوصهم النقدية، ومقاربتها دون أو إعتساف لها بما لا يمكنها البوح به.
وقد قسم الدراسة إلى قسمين وتمهيد؛ تناول في التمهيد لمحة عن نشأة الخطاب النثري في الأدب العربي القديم وتطوره، وأعقب ذلك بالحديث عن أوليات نقد هذا الخطاب، أما القسم الأول فقد دار حول: مفهوم الخطاب النثري من خلال مقارنته بالخطاب الشعري، وفيه تطرق إلى المحاولات التي كانت تهدف إلى التفريق بين الخطابين الشعري والنثري، ثم المحاولات التي كانت تهدف إلى التقريب بين الخطابين، ثم المحاولات التي كانت تهدف إلى المفاضلة بين الخطابين، وأخيراً مقاربة لتحديد مفهوم الخطاب النثري من خلال كل ما سبق.
وخصص القسم الثاني؛ لدراسة أجناس الخطاب النثري، وفي هذا القسم حاول التطرق إلى معظم الأجناس النثرية التي عرفها الخطاب النثري العربي القديم.
